What Dosage of Omega 3 Should You Be Taking, 500mg or 1,000 mg?

However, it's not as simple as this....and anyone who is just looking at dosage on the label may be missing the point. Although the dosage tells you something it doesn't tell you the whole picture.

And, if you really want the health benefits of omega-3, then you need to know the full picture.

First, understand that many products won't tell you the breakdown of the types of omega-3 in the product. As you may know, there are a few types of omega-3's. There is DHA, EPA, and ALA. ALA is found in vegetarian foods, like flaxseed, but are inferior because they need to be converted by the body into DHA and EPA to be used.

This conversion is often modest at best, and inefficient at worst...due to factors beyond one's control. Health conditions and older people's body may not convert ALA well.

In addition, numerous studies now show that DHA is more important than EPA for peak health. The brain especially requires a tremendous amount of DHA for optimal health. Many products, therefore, will only list the total amount of omega-3's, and not list the breakdown between DHA and EPA.

Choose a product with a higher DHA than EPA content.

Now, which should you choose: omega-3 500mg or omega-3 1,000 mg supplements? Well that depends on you. Some natural health experts believe the human body needs about 2-3 grams of omega-3's per day. 1,000 mg equals 1 gram.

So, if you are taking a soft gel product with 1,000 mg of omega-3's, and the dosage is 2 per day then you are getting 2 grams per day.

If you are taking omega-3 500mg, then of course you will need to take more throughout the day or understand that you are getting less than you may need.

Lastly, you should make sure your product contains a little bit of natural vitamin E as well. This helps prevent rancidity in the product as omega-3's are sensitive and can go bad quickly. The vitamin E, in short, acts as a preservative of sorts so your product stays fresh and you get the benefits you want.
