I was talking to my friend the other day and I casually mentioned that I take fish oil capsules every day. He was surprised to hear that and asked me if I hated seafood. I told him that I do eat seafood. As I expected, he questioned the logic behind taking Omega 3 essential fatty acid based supplements on top of eating fish. Actually, a lot of people have the same doubt. So, I decided to write this article to clarify this doubt.
There are two important reasons why taking a fish oil capsule can give you better results than eating fish.
Vitamins You Should Take Daily
1. As you know, the reason why doctors recommend eating fish is that it is rich in omega 3 fatty acids, which are extremely beneficial to your health. The problem, however, is that the amount of omega 3 fatty acids present in fish varies greatly. So, you cannot be sure of the amount you need to eat to meet the recommended dietary allowance for omega 3 fatty acids. On the other hand, when you take fish oil capsules, you know exactly how much fish oil you consume every day.
2. A lot of species of fish are known to contain heavy metal contaminants like methylmercury. These contaminants can be quite harmful to your health in the long run. This is why the US FDA advises people to avoid eating certain species of fish like swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish that are known to contain high levels of mercury. A fish oil capsule, on the contrary, is free of such contaminants as it is purified using latest purification techniques.
Now, it is not hard to understand why I think taking fish oil based supplements is a better idea, isn't it? Now, let me tell you a little bit about the supplements I take regularly.
The supplements I take are made from oily fish like hoki and tuna, which are two of the richest sources of DHA and EPA. Prior to concentration, the fish oil is molecularly distilled to make sure there are no contaminants. Each fish oil capsule, at the time of packing, contains more than 500 mg of omega 3 fatty acids. Also, these capsules meet the standards set by the European Pharmacopeia. So, I can safely say that the supplements I take are not only pure, but also effective.
Remember - there is no need to stop eating fish. As long as you choose fish that are low in mercury, there is no harm in eating fish. However, if you want to get the maximum health benefits, you should take high quality fish oil capsules that contain the ideal amount of omega 3 fatty acids. So, choose the right supplements, take them regularly, and stay in good health.
