Along with consuming foods, spending short periods in sunlight will also be of great help. Direct contact with natural sunlight helps in producing Vitamin D3, but the same effect is not possible with artificial light. Deficiency of Vitamin D leads to softening the bones in the body and decreases the ability of the body to use calcium and phosphorus. In some instances, it has been found that a deficiency of Vitamin D has a major impact on the brain and nervous system. It also decreases the efficiency of the liver, which results in a reduction of many vital processes in the body.

Some studies say that a lack of vitamin D can open the door to the development of colon cancer. Though available from several foods, it is a bit difficult to fix this deficiency with dietary changes. Most people obtain this vitamin through milk and other product that are artificially fortified.

Daily exposure to the sun for 15 minutes is a great way to generate vitamin D. However, the increased number of skin cancer patients is due improper exposure to sun. A little sun a day is very important for strong bones and joints, but going out and scorching oneself in the name for vitamin D is a very bad idea.
